Volunteering on the Nile:
The transformative experience of volunteering in Luxor provided my wife and I with invaluable lessons and memories that will have a lasting impact. We were fortunate enough to share a meal with local orphans, meet their families and listen to their stories which offered profound insights into their resilience and unwavering hope, despite the challenges they have and continue to face. Their determination to create a brighter future for themselves and their community despite systemic corruption, lack of government support and cuts to funding is genuinely inspiring.
On our second day, we spent the afternoon purchasing and delivering food to underprivileged families on the outskirts of town and we couldn’t believe how much these small acts of kindness would make a significant difference to the lives of those in need. The heartfelt appreciation expressed by the recipients was heartwarming and they invited us into their homes and offered us tea despite barely being able to afford the bare necessities. Spending time with these people was equally and heart wrenching as you got to see a glimpse of harsh living conditions and daily challenges these remarkable individuals face.
Reflecting on our time spent in Luxor, it is evident that the remarkable resilience and strength of the people encountered during the journey underscores the ongoing need for support from people like you and I. The lack of sufficent resources and support has left many children in boys/girls orphanages without a fair chance at fighting for a brighter future. The system has long ago abandoned these children, and further cuts to funding in January means they need outside help now more than ever.
