Teach to Fish Volunteer Testimonials: Jake

“I was surprised at how poor the living conditions are at the Luxor orphanages. They're in need of basic things I take for granted, such as blankets, clothes, and food. The washrooms are not adequate.

The orphanage that houses handicapped individuals currently has no doctor. Without a doctor, the orphans have no access to treatment or rehabilitation. There is an elevator in the facility that is non operational.

It was eye opening seeing how much help these individuals truly need.

We ate lunch at the home of a boy named Michael. Michael dropped out of school so he can work and provide for his mother and sister. Michael's home would not be liveable under Canadian standards. There was debris from the building in the main hallway and the sink faucet fell off when I went to wash my hands.

The one silver lining was the orphans positive attitude. Everyone we met was joyful and kind, despite the poor living conditions.” - Jake U. (on-site volunteer visit Oct 2022)
